Thomas & Farris Attorneys Student-Athlete of the Week: Jacob Varnell
Jacob Varnell had a career day for the Beddingfield High boys track and field team last week, making him this week’s Thomas & Farris Attorneys Student-Athlete of the Week.
In the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference championships Wednesday at Washington, Jacob won both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, setting a personal best in each. He finished the 1,600 in 4 minutes, 56.21 seconds and ran the 3,200 in 10:53.50. The sophomore also placed second in the pole vault with a personal-best height of 8 feet, 6 inches as the Bruins finished second overall.
Jacob has a weighted grade point average of 3.75 at Beddingfield, where he is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Future Farmers of America and the Pep Club. He also ran cross-country and was the placekicker for the Bruins junior varsity football team.
Outside of school, Jacob competes with Wilson Track Club at USA Track and Field events.
The son of Gay and Jim Varnell of Black Creek, Jacob has helped as a volunteer at the senior prom for senior citizens and through his church, White Oak Hill Free Will Baptist in Bailey.
