Thomas & Farris Attorneys Student-Athlete of the Week: Sofia Popowitch

Sofia Popowitch had another strong outing for the Hunt High girls swim team last week, making her this week’s Thomas & Farris Attorneys Student-Athlete of the Week.

The sophomore picked up the only individual win for the Lady Warriors as they tied with Fike for first place in Saturday’s 3-A Big East Conference meet in the Harrison Family YMCA pool in Rocky Mount. It was the third time in five meets that Hunt has finished first.

Sofia won the 100-yard butterfly and was part of Hunt’s victorious 400 freestyle relay team. She also finished third in the 100 backstroke and on the 200 medley relay.

Sofia has a 4.5 weighted GPA at Hunt, including the highest freshman GPA in honors English for the 2012-13 school year. She is a member of the French Club, Club UNIFY, Headbands for Hope and the Pink Ladies, for which she serves as vice president.

The daughter of Maria and Milo Popowitch of Wilson, Sofia sings in the Hunt chorus. She has appeared in numerous ACT! for Youth and Playhouse Productions plays, including a lead role in "Aladdin” last year.

She is working on her Girl Scout Gold Award and is a nominee for Governor’s School in 2014. She swam with the Wilson Barracudas swim team for 7 years and was a swimming instructor for Wilson Recreation Department.
