Thomas & Farris Attorneys Student-Athlete of the Week: Neil Blackwell

Neil Blackwell might be the busiest eighth-grader in Wilson County and he is this week’s Thomas & Farris Attorneys Student-Athlete of the Week.

Neil, a standout member of the Wilson Barracudas Swim Team, also plays basketball for Elm City Middle School. A holder of two Barracudas records, Neil swam in eight events in the Barracudas meet last weekend, finishing second in the 200-yard backstroke.

As a reserve for the Vikings, Neil is an excellent 3-pointer and free-throw shooter, head coach Brent Pearson said.

Rising three days a week at 4:30 a.m. during basketball season, Neil swims for 90 minutes before school. The rest of the year he swims two hours each afternoon.

The son of Connie Blackwell of Wilson and Kendall Blackwell of Wilson, Neil is a straight-A student at Elm City Middle, where he just won the Geography Bee.

He is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and, in the summer, teaches swimming lessons at Recreation Park Community Center.
