Now Playing: 50 years of ministry in music to be celebrated Saturday
Friday, October 31, 2008
Hundreds of Wilson and Wayne county churchgoers love Kat Uzelle, but they don’t know her real name. They just call her Kat Uzelle.
Her real name is Viola Katherine Fleming Uzelle.
Her mother always calls her Jim. (Ida Fleming, Viola’s mother, said she thought Viola was going to be a boy.)
But no matter what name she is called, she is welcomed with open arms whenever she comes to church.
That’s because for the past 50 years, most people who know her can’t think of a church that she and her sisters haven’t played the piano in, sang in, or taught proper etiquette to choir members.
St. Luke Free Will Baptist Church in Stantonsburg has had the pleasure of having Uzelle play the piano for them every fourth Sunday of the month since she was 9-years old.
Uzelle is now 59 years old.
To say thanks for the past 50 years, church members, local musicians, singing groups, local business people, and ministers will hold a special service Saturday, Nov. 8, at 4 p.m. at St. Luke.
Uzelle began playing the piano for her grandmother’s church, Eureka First Baptist Church in Wayne County, when she was 8 years old.
