Sunday, August 07, 2011
One woman is dead and her husband is in custody for her murder. Police said 43-year-old Cynthia Lewis Speight was stabbed to death by her husband Mark Speight, 46, both of 2821 Herman Road.
Wilson police were called to the residence around 4 p.m. in response to an unconscious person.
"When officers arrived on the scene, they found Ms. Speight deceased,” said Sgt. John Slaughter, police spokesman. "Her husband, Mark Speight was on the scene and was arrested for her murder.”
He is currently being held in the Wilson County Jail without bond charged with murder. Few details surrounding the circumstances of the killing were released by detectives as the investigation is in its early stages. Police said they are piecing together what took place inside the Herman Road home.
The intersection at Canal Drive and Herman Road was cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape as neighbors, family and friends began to gather at the intersection after getting word of the news.
Herman Road was blocked for hours as police gathered evidence and conducted interviews.
The sweltering heat didn’t keep neighbors from coming out of their homes in an effort to find out what happened.
One neighbor, who declined to give her name, said she had recently met Cynthia Lewis in the last few weeks. She said she didn’t know them well but "she seemed nice.” She was visibly shaken by the news of the murder, which took place just feet from her home.
Police obtained a search warrant for the home and upon receiving it, entered the home gathering evidence and taking photographs.
Investigators remained on the scene late into the night on Saturday.
