Now Playing: Building collapses downtown
Thursday, September 11, 2008
A vacant building at 131 Pettigrew St. collapsed shortly before 10 a.m. this morning, sending one man who had been working inside it to the hospital.A group of four men were working in the building this morning preparing it for demolition when one of the men noticed that one of the walls was starting to collapse.Three of the men were able to get out of the building in time, but Ralph Shawn Carter, who was on a ladder cutting steel under the roof, was only able to make it to the bottom of the ladder before the collapse occurred. The other three men pulled Carter out of the rubble and he was taken to Wilson Medical Center with apparently minor injuries. The workers had been at the building for two weeks preparing it for demolition. The other men at the building site when it collapsed were Samuel Edwards, 62, Samuel Tomlin, 17 and David Tomlin, 18.Wilson Police and Wilson Fire and Rescue Services both responded to the accident and still on the scene.
