Tornado cloud near WCA Wednesday, May 06, 2009
Video by Jayne Treadwell:
I took this video with my cell phone while standing in the front parking lot of Wilson Christian Academy. My daughter was in a soccer playoff game that was supposed to start at 4:30 but was delayed due to the weather. Players from both teams were hunkered down in the gym hallway "bonding" and becoming "frienemies" as my daughter called them, exchanging phone numbers and email addresses! The daycare kids were in the hallway of the daycare for the tornado warning, but us parents and some of the teachers/coaches were in the front parking lot watching this thing form! I watched the clouds in the sky towards I-95 look angry for about 20 minutes, then suddenly the clouds rose and I saw the rigidly straight front line start to pull into a big "v" formation in the space of 5 minutes. I could see the the clouds swirling and pulling the other clouds into the top of the funnel. Unfortunately I was so fascinated in watching the first take place that I forgot about my cell phone video feature! This formed shortly after the tornado touched down at Rock Ridge. You can hear the siren chirp of a deputy sheriff who pulled into the parking lot to warn us all to take cover because we were in the tornado's path. Fortunately the tornado passed by us and after two false starts due to additional weather warnings, the game and the new "frienemies" was eventually played in it's entirety with Wilson Christian winning and advancing to the State Tournament at Vandalia Christian in Greensboro this Friday and Saturday! |
