Now Playing: High winds cause power outage
Thursday, January 08, 2009
A cold front that pushed through the state Wednesday brought high winds through Wilson, blowing down trees and limbs and knocking out power to 2,550 customers.
Brain Bowman, Wilson's public affairs manager, said strong winds moved through the city between 5-6 p.m. when gusts of 50 mph were recorded at the city's Operation Center.
During that period of time, several different power outages occurred across the city.
A tree fell across a transformer on Canal Street, knocking out power to 1,100 customers. Another tree fell on a utility pole on Martin Luther King Boulevard, which knocked out power to that area of town and to Walstonburg, leaving 1,400 customers in the dark. That outage required extensive work from city crews, Bowman said.
