There were bumblebees from BB&T, popping popcorn from Lucama Elementary School and more clowns than you could count.
And while there was plenty of clowning around at Tuesday night’s 14th Annual Adult Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Wilson Education Partnership, there were also plenty of serious spellers among the 47 teams competing for the top prize.
And when the big show finally came to an end, it was the team from Kidde Aerospace & Defense who was left standing.
The team from Kidde outspelled the team from Beddingfield High School in the final round, with the winning word being “grok,” which means the ability to understand something intuitively or by empathy.
Of course it helped that the Kidde team had a member, Tina Greene, who knew that the winning word came from science fiction writer Robert Heinlein, who invented the word in his book
