Paycheck problems prompt protest Saturday, August 30, 2008
A pay discrepancy brought workers from the Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf to the front of the school Friday afternoon, carrying signs to protest the paychecks they received Thursday for the month of August.A new accounting system called the Beacon System is how all state employees are now paid, but employees of the school say the system has failed them.In June, workers that are employed for 10 months of the year were paid for the whole month of June, although they only worked for one week.Letters from the Department of Health and Human Services, dated July 28, were sent to staff members telling them they had been overpaid and that they would receive a second letter letting them know how much they would need to pay back as soon as the new system could figure it out.
