Fike girls upset Beddingfield in ECC Championship game Wednesday, December 31, 2008

Before a standing room-only crowd in the Fike High gym Tuesday night, the Fike varsity girls basketball team ended archrival Beddingfield’s four-year reign as the Eastern Carolina Classic holiday champion with a stirring 57-50 victory. The Lady Golden Demons of head coach John Gay netted the last four points on free throws in the final 20 seconds to celebrate their first Classic championship since 2003 and ended a skid against the Lady Bruins that had reached 16 games. While Fike notched a record 17th Classic title and conquered the Lady Bruins for the 11th time in 15 championship meetings, Beddingfield lost to a county opponent for the first time since falling to Fike in the 2003 Classic final and settled for a record 13th runner-up finish. |
