Southern Nash had its ground game working in Friday night’s 3-A NEW 6 Conference varsity football opener at Nash Central. But the host Bulldogs had the aerial attack that made the difference in their 24-13 win.
Nash Central struck for touchdowns on passes of 33 and 35 yards as it ended the Firebirds winning streak at two games. Southern Nash, 3-3 overall, rumbled for 228 yards on the ground, including a season-high 79 by Matt Sampson, but the Firebirds yielded 135 yards and three TDs through the air. Quarterback Chris Whitley had a pair of 1-yard TD runs to answer scoring tosses by his Bulldogs counterpart Charles Rollins. The Firebirds took a 13-12 lead on the second Whitley score with 6:08 to go in the second quarter but Michael Speight’s 1-yard plunge gave the Bulldogs (4-3) the lead for keeps. Rollins hit Dominique Holloway on a 35-yard strike to provide the final cushion with 4:23 remaining in the third quarter. Danny Allen was the recipient of Rollins’ first two TD passes. Gary Tharrington ran for 72 yards for Southern Nash while Clinton Whitley added 62. The Firebirds were unable to take advantage of three Bulldogs fumbles and lost two of their own. Southern Nash visits Northern Nash next Friday. |
