Horses find refuge on county farm
When Debra Girten met Red, the horse was on his way to auction. Once a prestigious racing machine, Red was not much use anymore, at least not on the track. He was lame, nursing a fractured hip. His racing days were over. Girten knew if she left the Penn National Race Course without him, Red would likely be sold and slaughtered. She couldn’t bear the thought of the chestnut-colored thoroughbred being served as a delicacy in another country, so she loaded him on her horse trailer and headed back to her quiet and tranquil horse farm in Wilson County.
