Democratic official rebukes chairman

The president of the African-American Caucus of the Wilson County Democratic Party, Zette McArn, read a letter to the Wilson County Democratic chairman, Asa Gregory, accusing him of not being transparent and not adhering to the N.C. Plan of Organization at all times.

"We admonish the chair of this county chapter of the North Carolina Democratic Party to the very best of his ability or capability to make a fervent effort to adhere and administer in all the affairs regarding and governing the Wilson County Democratic Party — the North Carolina Plan of Organization,” McArn read to a room full of Wilson County Democrats.

The letter also stated that Gregory should include all executive members and all established NCDP auxiliaries in the county "abreast of news, actions and events with regard to the business affairs of the Wilson County Democratic Party.”

In addition, the letter told Gregory their request is reasonable and encompassed any further issues that may come up.

"As long as you continue to make your own rules, enact your own rules and insist that others blindly follow your rules without discussion or deliberation, we shall find ourselves at the opposite end of the meeting table,” the letter states. "Mr. Chair, willful noncompliance coupled with willful intent is the wrong mind set and leadership style. Such actions are not wanted, desired or needed in the position as chair for this county party.”

The letter asked for "full disclosure, transparency, integrity, accountability and inclusion.”

"We request and require you to adjust your moral compass. Respect the process,” the letter stated.

Earlier this year, some Democrats said Gregory should have talked to Democrats when their bank account was drained by the boyfriend of then-treasurer Barbara Dantonio.

Gregory said he did not try to hide the fact the money was stolen, only to fix the problem.

Brenda Avery, chairwoman of Wilson County Democrat Women who shared the same treasurer, said in an earlier interview that she was very disappointed that everyone in her executive committee knew about the theft except for her.

McArn did not elaborate at the meeting about why the letter was written.

Gregory did not respond to the letter.

"Thank you,” Gregory said.

To The Wilson County Democrat(s) who wrote the following statement in the Wilson Times comment section: Let’s address your rhetoric.
For Openers, Consider the “chatter chit-chat” of an estranged anonymous writer who knows more about the situation than those involved or so they would have folk to believe.
Per the statement, “She had the opportunity to speak her mind at the Executive Committee Meeting and she chose not to.” If you were at that meeting and really paying attention you heard me make the comment that at some point, place and time WE, as a county party have to follow the rules. WE have to decide the Plan of Organization will govern our actions and set us on a path that keeps us on the right side of doing things. Since you know so much, how convenient for you to fail to share that.
The letter to Gregory, actually, never specified any particulars of why the letter was written. Your mentioning several attorneys, their advice and what was told to Brenda Avery implies you believe you know a great deal about the situation. That you’re comfortable and confident with the information you share. Your comment also implies that you know exactly what you’re talking about with a degree of authority.
As for an “on-going’ disapproval of everything Asa Gregory has done that’s more your opinion than factuality. You’re entitled to your opinion, but not your own inflated facts.(LOL) …What you believe is or is not of interest to others is really of no relevance. Relatively speaking.Your speculations and opinions do not mandate authority.
When it comes to the affairs of the Wilson County Democratic Party, when the County Committee is not is session, the Wilson County Executive Committee has governance. Should the CEC vote to request the opinion of an attorney and thus, be led to follow said advice, that would be the decision of the CEC not the Chair independently speaking. This was not the case.
Regarding your statement of: How embarrassing for the Wilson County Democratic Party and the African American Caucus of Wilson County that you choose to air this in the newspaper. it should have read 'chose' not choose... AND,embarrassment settles where it falls, in the same manner as dust.
I exercised the right to free speech. In an open meeting, the press is free to write whatever they deem newsworthy. In the same like manner when they reported the missing money that was taken, I meant (smh) stolen by the boyfriend of a county officer.
With that said, I’ll shake off the dust from my feet.
There is a place for openness, transparency accountability and truth. Those currently charged with leading this party have no respect for that. What certain members fail to comprehend is that there is a process. RESPECT THE PROCESS … or YOU MOVE ON … AND, regarding respect...RESPECT … IS NOT GIVEN, RATHER IT’S EARNED.

Consider the source of this letter and rise above it. Zette McArn has had an ongoing disapproval of everything Asa Gregory has done. She had the opportunity to speak her mind at the Executive Meeting and she chose not to. Better to embarrass the chair in the newspaper. Well you can see after a month that this letter is really no interest to anyone but Ms. McArn. Asa Gregory took the high road and did not respond. What Ms. McArn fails to realize but others do, is that Asa Gregory followed the advice of several attorneys in keeping quiet about an ongoing investigation. Well I guess we all know what Ms. McArn would do in a similar situation, she would go to the newspaper and blab all she knows regardless of the attorney's advice. How sad. Asa Gregory has done a very good job as Chair of the Wilson County Democrats. Brenda Avery was advised by the State Democratic Women, Sarah Anderson, to keep it out of the newspaper and Brenda Avery chose to ignore that advice. To quote the letter, your actions, Ms. McArn are not wanted, desired or needed in your position as chair of the African American Caucus of Wilson County. How embarrassing for the Wilson County Democratic Party and the African American Caucus of Wilson County that you choose to air this in the newspaper. Guess that is why there were only two comments in a month. Move on and be a better person and respect Asa Gregory and the improvements he has made in Wilson County.

Interesting!
Knowing all 3 parties can't wait to see how this unfold. Obviously there was a lack of communication as I read the article/s about this situation with the money several months ago. Sad!
It is sad that Wilson County continues to have problems with those persons who are elected and/or appointed to the office of the county chair seems like every term.
If I am correct 2013 the county officers seats are up so who will become the next county chair?
