Maria Gabrera returned home around noon Wednesday to 4305 Chinook Court when she smelled and saw smoke. Mike Brown, a firefighter with the East Nash Volunteer Fire Department, says that Gabrera and her family were lucky she came home then because otherwise the house would have become fully engulfed in flames. "The fire started underneath the home," Brown said. "When we got here we saw flames coming out of the crawl space." After investigating, Brown thinks an electrical problem started the blaze. Gabrera, her husband and two children will be staying with family and friends while repairs are made to the home. About 15 firefighters from East Nash, Silver Lake and Toisnot volunteer fire departments responded to the scene. No one was injured, but one firefighter was treated and released by EMS at the scene for heat exhaustion. The Wilson County Tax Records lists the value of the home at $75,000. Brown estimates the damage to the structure to be $5,000. Gabrera said she did not have any insurance. |
