Farm Fresh to close
Two restaurants look to open in the Gateway Plaza

The Gateway Plaza will lose a major tenant next month but is also preparing to gain two restaurants.

Thirty-seven Farm Fresh grocery store employees were told on Thursday the store will close Feb. 21, nine months after its grand opening in Wilson. Employees as well as customers were saddened by the news Friday.

"I really hate that," said Clara Fulghum of Kenly, who shops at Farm Fresh regularly. "They just got here. It must be the economy because they have plenty of customers."

Several Farm Fresh employees were talking about the closing with each other and customers as they worked Friday.

"I'm sad because I don't want to be on unemployment," said Tomika Moore, a Farm Fresh deli worker from Bailey. "A lot of people are saying they didn't give it a chance."

Farm Fresh opened in the Gateway Plaza in May, just days after competitor Harris Teeter opened a new store at Heritage Crossing shopping center. The company planned to hire 125-150 workers but the store now has just 37 employees.

"Farm Fresh is closing its Wilson, N.C., location effective Feb. 21," said Susan Mayo, vice president of consumer affairs and public relations for Virginia Beach, Va.-based Farm Fresh Supermarkets. "Like all retail operators, it is part of the normal course of business to continue to review and update our store portfolio. While the decision to close a store is always difficult, given the impact on associates and customers, it is guided by what is best for our company."

Since May, Farm Fresh offered Wilson-area shoppers a variety of choices. The grocer has offered a wing bar, rotisserie and fresh fried chicken, fresh subs, sandwiches, wraps and a soup and salad bar. The store has had a full-service deli with Boar's Head products, a health food department, bake shop, cheese shop, wine depot, floral department and a pharmacy.

"I'm sorry to hear (about the closing)," said Edna Bass, a Fountain-area resident. "I hate that. It seems to be the case these days that businesses are closing."

The Farm Fresh closing comes at the same time that the SuperValu chain, which owns Farm Fresh, announced that 50 stores will close in 2009. Farm Fresh has 5,000 employees working at 44 stores in Virginia and North Carolina. SuperValu has 2,500 retail grocery locations and approximately 190,000 employees nationwide.

While the Farm Fresh closing will leave a hole in the Gateway Plaza, the shopping center could add two new tenants this year. Representatives with Buffalo Wild Wings Grill and Bar are seeking city permits that would allow the opening of a restaurant in the former Party America store, which is next to Farm Fresh near Raleigh Road.

The restaurant may add an outdoor patio seating area that would take up six asphalt parking spaces on the west side of the building near Raleigh Road, said Janet Holland, assistant director of Wilson Planning and Development Services.

The patio seating area and the restaurant's plans to open in the plaza require the issuance of a conditional use permit by the Wilson City Council. The plaza is considered inside a highway business park, a B-6 zone, which requires the permit prior to opening.

"If they are on schedule and get everything approved, they can go to the February Planning Board and City Council (meetings)," Holland said.

The patio is proposed to be a raised concrete area with landscaping. The restaurant would locate inside of a 6,400 square-foot building and offer inside seating, with a bar similar to bars located in Applebee's restaurants, Holland said. City planning staff are also discussing facade ideas for the restaurant.

Buffalo Wild Wings is a growing restaurant chain with two new restaurant locations in Knightdale and Burlington. Out of its 500 stores nationwide, North Carolina is home for 13, including Greenville. The company promotes itself as being "a home away from home for wings, beer and sports lovers across the country," with 14 signature sauces and 40 cent wing Tuesdays and 50 cent boneless Thursdays.

Also in the works for the Gateway Plaza is a Checker's restaurant. City Council will review proposed site plans this month and decide whether to issue a permit that would allow the drive-through chain to open on the Forest Hills side of the plaza near Home Depot.

Really hate to see Farm Fresh go! Great store! Very excited about Buffalo Wild Wings! Finally a cool place to hang out. Don't know why people get so upset around here if we have a little nightlife..what's it hurting, really?

Wilson doesn't need grocery stores. It just needs hamburgers. Hamburgers! AND MORE HAMBURGERS!

Come on Synder, Wilson has changed dramatically in 14 years. Which exit are you taking out of town? The selection is also getting better with restaurants: Applebee's, Texas, Chili's, Ruby Tuesday, Rocky's, Ribeye Room, Quince, Rib Hut, Paul's, and others. I could keep going. The selection is only going to get better! Some of the restaurants you mention will probadly show up one day. That's their decision, not the Wilson Planning Board's. Also, Wilson's growth in the last 4 years has been every bit as good as what Rocky Mount is doing, if not better!

I hate to see it go as well, we really enjoyed going there. Was always a pleasure to go to the grocery store without an off duty cop wondering around the place. The problem with Wilson is they have a Wal-Mart disease. Everyone is shopping at Wal-Mart and myself can not stand to go there.Boy was I glad to see Target. Just look around when you ride around everyone is wearing the same clothes from wally world.. I also heard the SEARS was going to be next. Please no more fast food restaurants, we never eat in Wilson anymore because it's the same ole selection on every corner. Lets get some more class in this town. How about a Tripp's, Olive Garden, O'Charley's, Lone Star. Look around you Wilson Planning board. Look at Rocky Mount Knightdale. The growth in these towns in the past 4yrs has been tremendous. I work in Raleigh and have done so for the past 14yrs and Wilson has not changed much. Oh yea and who's idea was it to put Wachovia on that busy corner? I hate to even go to the bank too.. LOL BAD BAD planning on Wilson's part.

We have already heard complaints from overnighters at the Candlewood Suites about the smell from Cook-out. Who approved it to be so close to the Hotels!??

Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 5:56 AM Oil change with dinner? said...

I seriously have to question the placement of the new oil change/auto repair shop jammed amid the cluster of restaurants and within a short distance of a hotel. You want to create an environment for overnight guests and local restaurant patrons and that does NOT include an auto shop. Being "pro-active and pro-business" is not mutually exclusive from making smart planning decisions. Whoever rubber-stamped this one needs to shape up.

That's good. People can't afford new cars now, so they have to patch up what they've already got. A multiplicity of auto parts stores reflects Wilson's economic nosedive.

O'Reilly Auto Parts is opening one new store on Forest Hills Rd. and is rumored to be considering another on West Nash. Can Wilson support two more auto parts stores? We have 1 NAPA, 1 Carquest, 1 Autozone, 2 Advance Auto's, & others.

Recently I visited the Farm Fresh in Virginia Beach, VA. An employee approached me, and asked me which Farm Fresh I preferred. Of course, I told her # 187. I have been going to this location for the past 4 years and love the friendlyness of people, location, layout, and groceries available. The address is 1832 Kempsville Road, Virginia Beach, VA. 23464. I would really appreciate it if you would take great consideration in keeping this location open. Not just for customers like myself, but the interest and welfare of the employees who would hate to lose their job. God Bless, Sincerely, Josephine Thomasson

Two giants met in Battle Supermarket. We have our victor and it's as I predicted to a colleague just last week. My thoughts go out to those who've lost jobs. OTOH, I'm so not jazzed to see Wilson become the fast food capital of the world. We need businesses and restaurants, but please, can't there be a little more imagination involved in what businesses choose (and are chosen) to come here? In the past year alone: more Italian, two auto parts stores, and another failed supermarket. It must be nice to have that much money to gamble.

http://www.wilsontimes.com/Print/Farm-Fresh-opens-- Someone should also tell the writers to check their facts in their stories, because they seem to embellish them. In this original story (see link) writer claimed they Hired 190 people at that store. Gee what's next? Target never hired 800 people as reported? Guess what? The didn't. Let's stop lying to justify all the incentives we are giving these businesses and stop making the Developer seem like some savior.

I hate to see any new business fail. It does appear that Home Depot is not getting alot of traffic. Again, can Wilson support 2 home improvement warehouses? Lowes has an established store here & few are changing sides. The housing downturn is not helping Home Depot out either.

That entire shopping center with Farm Fresh and Home Depot is nothing but a public nuisance.

I knew Farm Fresh will go out of business in a month, because their prices are way to high. I visited the Farm Fresh in Arkansas one time and I saw how high their prices were then and I knew right then if they were to get a store out here, they will not be able to compete with wal-mart and Aldi Food Stores. It was a total waste of the taxpayers and the city to allow any store to rent there. Any store that was in the shopping center all went under. The Win-Dixie food stores, Cooks department stores and then K-Mart. I really don't think the Home Depot will succeed either and they might of well tear down the shopping center and build with houses or low-income apartments there.

I am not surprised at all that Harris Teeter is doing good! I love it, I like to walk into a grocery store and see clean floors or items put away correctly and such a variety of items! Now if we had a Lowes Foods it might be a diffrent story :)

KH, If you meant good, clean, grocery stores, then you're absolutely right. They are few & far between. I'll admit, I'm a die-hard Food Lion shopper. I know their floor-plan better than they do. Some Food Lions are cleaner than others.

The selection of good grocery stores is few. I want a clean environment in the store where I purchase my groceries. That eliminates several of the previously named stores that do not meet my expectations. I have not been in Save a lot so I will take a peek. As for the hot wings place....enjoy! That doesn't interest me at all since I am in the group of "retired and/or fixed income" as are many of Wilson's citizens....I won't be frequenting sports bars or fast food joints. I will figure out something for groceries....

I'm surprised H-T isn't in dire straits. Their prices are beyond ridiculous. FF could be high but could also have great deals (like H-T used to be). Pretty soon we'll all be stickin' with the pig.

To be honest I am very surprised that Wilson even had a Farm Fresh! Raleigh use to have them about 20yrs ago and I thought they were a thing of the past! I am also surprised that the people in Belle Meade are not fighting against the Buffalo Wild Wings being built there since I have heard they were so against Zaxbys coming to that area!

Sunday, January 11, 2009 at 12:21 PM TheHotCorner said...

KH, I've also got to disagree with you about Buffalo Wild Wings. That's a very sucessful chain that I think is going to do very well in Wilson. Wilson is a sports haven, and full of Wing Lovers. I'll definately be there!

Sunday, January 11, 2009 at 11:31 AM TheHotCorner said...

Come on KH, the choices are not few for grocery stores in Wilson! Four Food Lions, one Harris Teeter, Aldi, Piggly Wiggly, Save-A-Lot, and others. Poor management is to blame for Farm Fresh closing so soon after opening. They should have known 9 months ago they couldn't afford to open another location. If you are going to open any store in the Wilson market, you have to be ready to grow your business over several months. Farm Fresh never gave it a chance! Here's a question these companies need to ask themselves before coming to Wilson: Is Wilson big enough to support another large grocery chain? For Kroger, and now, Farm Fresh, the answer was NO!

Sunday, January 11, 2009 at 11:20 AM Kay Hannaford said...

The choices are few for grocery stores, and that is what makes this so tragic. It will take a "varience" to approve a sports bar, but we know that the Council usually approves anything anywhere. It is absurd to put a checkers and a buffalo wing place there. JMO That will just be another shopping area that people will avoid. I wish Farm Fresh would reconsider.....but it still won't force me to go to Heritage.

Let's contact Farm Fresh's corporate office and try to change their minds. It's worth a shot. My experiences at this location were always pleasant.

Something must be wrong with Wilson bringing all these businesses here that close a year later. Now they are bringing in Alcohol related drinking establishments to make the roads even more dangerous!??

The winner is Harris-Teeter! The losers are sadly the employees and investors. Today's English newspaper The Daily telgraph has a prediction that in 3-5 years countries will drop and dump the dollar, that's when it will get to be even worse.

This is a tragic loss for those of us who enjoyed the cleanliness and friendly atmosphere of Farm Fresh. We waited a long time for that store to open and it hardly had a chance. I know that corporate offices have to do what is best for their companies, but this is a real shame. I guess it is a sign of the times. I would like to say thank you to all of the people at Farm Fresh who made our shopping days extra special, it was the "real" customer service that kept us coming back.

Belle Meade's worth is going down the tubes fast. It smells like grease back in there. And will only get worse. Who wants a luxury home surrounded by traffic noise, neon lights and smelly grease? Wilson needs new Planners. Period.
