Father mourns on granddaughter's first birthday

Cassandra D. Jones celebrated her first birthday Friday, but did so without her father, Desmond C. Jones.

Desmond Jones, 18, of 4907 Rainwater Road, Lucama, died Thursday afternoon after his motorcycle crashed into a van on Radford Road around 4:17 p.m.

Desmond Jones and his passenger were traveling east on Radford Road on a 2000 Honda 929 motorcycle when he collided with a 2002 Chrysler Town and Country van driven by James Ray Boswell of 4856 Radford Road, Wilson.

James Jones, Desmond's father, said Friday was a bittersweet day.

"My granddaughter is turning one today and I lost my son yesterday," he said Friday afternoon. "All he talked about the last few weeks was giving her the best first birthday party ever."

According to the investigation report, Boswell was traveling east on Radford Road when he attempted to make a left-hand turn into his driveway. At the same time, Jones, who was traveling at least 61 miles per hour, attempted to overtake and pass Boswell.

As Boswell was making his turn, Jones crashed into the driver's door of Boswell's van, and he and his passenger, 20-year-old Bobby Martrez Bradberry, 20, of 5658-A St. Mary's Church Road, Lucama, were violently thrown from the motorcycle.

Jones' body struck the van before he was thrown through the air approximately 79 feet. He died from his injuries at the scene.

Bradberry did not come in contact with any objects before landing approximately 173 feet from the accident site.

Both men on the motorcycle were wearing helmets, according to the report.

Bradberry was transported to Wilson Medical Center and then airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital where he is being treated in the trauma intensive care unit. According to James Jones, he said the last update he had received was that Bradberry was still listed in critical condition.

Boswell had three passengers in his van: his wife, Jane Boswell, 46, their daughter, Jamie Boswell, 11, and a family friend, 11-year-old Heather Spragins of 7365 Little Rock Church Road, Lucama. All four were transported to Wilson Medical Center for treatment of their injuries, none of which were life threatening.

North Carolina State Trooper G. Grady, who investigated the accident, said both drivers contributed to the accident.

"There are two contributing factors here," Grady said. "One, the van made an unsafe movement; and two, the motorcycle was exceeding the authorized speed limit."

The N.C. Highway Patrol met with a representative from the district attorney's office today to determine whether charges will be filed in the accident.

Grady said that he had not heard from the district attorney's office as of 4:30 p.m.

"We will now have to wait until Monday to receive an answer," he said.

My prayers go out to the Jones family it was a tragic accident... but people are to quick to judge... It was something within GODS will to happen... So take it ease on what you thought about the two or the speed that the bike was going there were two factors in the accident... no he shouldnt have attempted to go around the van but if it was you or anyone else you would have done the same... Let Demo rest in peace and Bobby get Well!!! Much love and respect

illegal equipement and extreme speed were factors. it is a shame that he did not think about the safety of himself and others and the future of his family before making poor decisions. hopefully this will be a lesson learned for his friends and others. with a van full, more damage could have been done.

How did some one determine that the bike was going 61 mph? I am not a person with knowledge to determine that but, it seems it was going faster. It knocked the van several feet from the driveway in to a ditch, dented the drivers side of the van in several inches. Plus look how far it through the victims.

I feel for Mr. Jones and Mr. Bradberry but how about give some respect and feelings for the other family of the wreck. No they did not have a death but they have to go thruogh the knowing they were involved.
