Wednesday, October 08, 2008 10:42 AM Fike graduate a source of strength behind Eve Carson run By Janelle Clevinger | Times Staff Writer "On The Map" heads west today, to a place near and dear to my heart and the hearts of many who live in Wilson. That place is Chapel Hill, and, despite what my N.C. State friends might say, it is one of the most beautiful places in our great state. On Nov. 14, Chapel Hill will host an event sure to raise spirits in a town devastated by the violent murder of UNC-CH student body president Eve Carson last March. The inaugural Eve Carson Memorial 5K for Education will attract runners and contributors from all over the state, as UNC-CH students, city residents and students from other college campuses gather to help raise money for The Eve Carson Memorial Scholarship, First Book, and Clyde Erwin Elementary School in Onslow County. And spearheading this massive undertaking is a UNC-CH senior who hails from Wilson. Sallie Wallace, a 2005 Fike High School graduate and the daughter of Charles and Myra Wallace, is the co-director for the 5K event, which is sponsored by her sorority, Pi Beta Phi, and Phi Delta Theta, a fraternity on campus. "I didn't know Eve personally," Sallie told me over the phone, "but everyone on campus was touched by her life and her death." "I've never felt so connected to an event before," Sallie continued. "I am just so positive that this is what I'm supposed to be doing and would love the support of my fellow Wilsonians at this event." At the time of her death, Eve was developing a merit scholarship to recognize individuals who were beginning to realize their potential as leaders while attending Carolina. After her death, the University and Eve's parents established the Eve Marie Carson Junior-Year Merit Scholarship which will be funded by a memorial fund. This 5K run will be the first major fundraiser for the fund and will be the largest race ever run in Chapel Hill with more than 1,000 participants already intending to run. Two-thirds of the funds raised at The Eve Carson Memorial 5K for Education will go directly to the scholarship funds. The remaining third will be divided between First Book, a national non-profit that provides new books to low-income families, and Clyde Erwin Elementary School in Onslow County, which has been identified as a priority school due to the unusually high percentage of economically disadvantaged students. "This was Eve's dream," said Sallie of the scholarship fund. "It's ironic that because of her death, her dreams are coming true." Sallie, who will graduate in the spring with a degree in speech and hearing sciences, plans to earn her master's in speech pathology and eventually become a speech therapist for special needs children. Sallie Wallace is making a difference. And she's my new hero. For more information on The Eve Carson Memorial 5K for Education, visit www.educationforeve.com.
