Monday, August 25, 2008 10:39 AM Final Farmers Market set Aug. 30 By Billy Little Agriculture extension agent The Wilson Farmers Market had a very successful opening season in 2008. After much work and planning by the advisory board of the Wilson Farmers Market during the winter of 2007, the market opened in May of 2008 at the Wilson Fairgrounds. The market has operated every Saturday from 7:30 a.m. until noon at the open shelter at the fairgrounds except Easy Rider weekend when it located in front of the fairgrounds and used tents for that day. The Wilson Farmers Market would like to thank the entire Wilson community for the support they have given the market through the summer. From the beginnings in May the market has developed in produce availability, vendor numbers and consumers visiting the market all through the summer. The Wilson Farmers Market is ending the season with 18 members selling produce and 4 more vendors just starting and looking forward to joining next year. A couple of highlights stand out during the season as one Saturday with 16 vendors selling there were 800 customers coming though the market. The Saturday that the Wilson Farmer Market Reusable bags were given away to customers, the 300 bags were gone by 9:15 that morning. This new market has also been a great learning experience for both vendors and consumers. The growers of course in the beginning did not know exactly how to plan for this market this year. Do you increase plantings, how much do you stagger plantings for each week, what produce would really move among the consumers each week? With the experience of the market our growers now know how to plan for next year. We look forward to an even earlier opening market and a later operating season next year. The demand from the community is present and the market looks forward to expanding next year. The consumers have also learned the times that much of our local produce becomes available and the interaction between themselves and the people that actually grew the produce is great. With the demand for local produce our growers can now stagger plantings so items like sweet corn are available throughout the season versus a couple of two-week periods. We can extend the season with pumpkins, plants and other items people like in the fall. The Wilson Farmers Market plans to close after Aug. 30 for the season. So be sure and come out for the last Market Day of 2008 on Saturday, Aug. 30. Be sure and keep the taste and thought of fresh local produce on your mind this winter and we look forward to seeing you again in 2009. |
