Wednesday, November 19, 2008 12:32 PM Final Wilson vote totals are released By Matt Shaw | Times Staff Writer President Paris Hilton? How about a rousing chorus of "Hail to the Chief," followed by an encore of "Cheeseburger in Paradise"? Socialite Hilton and singer Jimmy Buffett were among the folks that Wilsonians thought would make a better president than either Barack Obama or John McCain. Other write-in votes in the Nov. 4 election, according to Elections Director Ann Cone, went to U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura, former Secretary of State Colin Powell and the late President Ronald Reagan. None of those votes counted, though, since state law requires write-in candidates for major races to register. The only official write-in candidates were Ralph Nader, who received two votes, and Cynthia McKinney, with one. Wilson County recently completed its canvass of the vote, which changed some vote totals but not the outcomes of any race. Here are the official county tallies in several races: President: Obama, 19,652 votes, 53 percent; McCain, 17,375, 47 percent; Bob Barr, 123. U.S. Senate: Kay Hagan, 20,776, 57 percent; Elizabeth Dole, 15,384, 42 percent; Chris Cole, 1 percent. U.S. House, 1st District: G.K. Butterfield, 10,780, 78 percent; Dean Stephens, 3,076, 22 percent. U.S. House, 3rd District: Walter B. Jones, 13,694. 62 percent; Craig Weber, 8,494, 38 percent. Governor: Bev Perdue, 21,087, 58 percent; Pat McCrory, 15,109, 41 percent; Mike Munger, 504, 1 percent. N.C. House, 23rd District: Joe Tolson, 9,219, 54 percent; Garland Shepheard, 7890, 46 percent. Wilson County Board of Education, District 4: Henry Mercer, 2,037, 56 percent; James Brake, 1,631, 44 percent; write-ins, six. District 6: Gary Farmer, 3,290, 64 percent; Joe Testino, 1,042, 20 percent; Gale Shafer, 773, 15 percent. mshaw@wilsontimes.com | 265-7878 |
