That's what the community group Safe Kids Wilson County is all about. On Tuesday, the group hosted an open house at the Wilson County Emergency Services Facility in an effort to make as much safety information as possible available to the public. Maryam Mujahid, one of the people that attended the two-hour open house, said she likes to attend these kinds of events because she wants to say on top of all of the latest information and refresh the knowledge she does have. "I don't want to assume that I know everything about keeping my children safe," she said. "When you do, that's when they get hurt." Safe Kids Wilson County is part of a national organization called Safe Kids Worldwide. It is a nonprofit organization set up to prevent accidental childhood injuries. According to the Web site www.safekids.org, the mission of the organization is to focus on the fact that more children ages 1 to 14 die from accidents such as motor vehicle crashes, fires, drowning, poisoning and falls, than any other cause. Safe Kids Worldwide promotes changes in attitudes, behaviors, laws and the environment to prevent accidental injury to children. Mujahid said she takes precautions on keeping her children, ages 20 months and 3 years, safe as much as possible. At Tuesday's event, Mujahid got safety information on electric heaters, clothes dryers, fire prevention, four-wheelers, and child car seats. "I come and get my car seats checked periodically to make sure they are installed correctly," she said. Six of the nine people involved in Safe Kids Wilson County are nationally certified in the installation of child safety seats. Denise Whitley, chairperson of the organization and who works at the 911 call center, said she is happy to work for the group and would like to see more people involved in the effort. "We need volunteers," she said. "We could accomplish so much with more volunteers." Dot Tabron, co-coordinator for Wilson County EMS, said the group will participate in several events in October. Tabron said they will have a booth at the N.C. Department of Transportation's Health Fair at the county fairgrounds later this week, and at the 50th Anniversary celebration for the Cross Roads Fire Department in Lucama this Saturday. Anyone interested in volunteering their time is asked to contact Tabron by phone at 237-0789 or by e-mail at dhtabron@wilsoncountyems.com. gina@wilsontimes.com | 265-7821 |
