Tuesday, August 12, 2008 11:16 AM Jogger hit by van By Gina Childress | Times Staff Writer A man was hit by a Southern Elevator van while jogging on Packhouse Road Monday afternoon. Jon Anderson, fire chief with the Silver Lake Volunteer Fire Department, said the pedestrian was hit around 4:58 p.m. and received cuts and abrasions. "I expected it to be a lot worse when I got here," Anderson said. The accident report, which was completed by Trooper C. Purvis with the N.C. Highway Patrol, stated that Donavan Eugene Walston, 35, of 5427 Lakehaven Court, was traveling east on Packhouse Road behind the pedestrian, David Chadwick Bass, 28, of 5369 Packhouse Road. The investigation showed that Walston's van, which is owned by Southern Elevator, struck Bass from behind while Bass was jogging with the flow of traffic. The estimated speed of the van at the time of impact was 55 miles per hour, Purvis said in his report. Bass was transported by EMS to Wilson Medical Center for his injuries. No further information regarding the extent of Bass' injuries was available this morning. Walston was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. gina@wilsontimes.com | 265-7821 |
