Monday, December 29, 2008 10:08 AM NCSU Club seeks donations for renovations The Associated Press RALEIGH -- The North Carolina State University Club is trying to raise $2 million for its first major renovations in a half-century. The club offers a pool, tennis courts, dining and a par-3 golf course at relatively low prices to people with connections to the university. The News & Observer of Raleigh reports the club plans to rebuild locker rooms, build a new modern kitchen and open a second pool starting in February. The club remains a 1960s slice of Raleigh as the area has sprawled around it. The driveway rolls past the veterinary college's pastures as cows watch cars pass. "It is kind of a Norman Rockwell picture of Raleigh to some degree, and it's a nice thing that we can keep that going," said member Tom Childrey, 51, of Raleigh. The renovations will cost $6 million. The club is seeking $2 million in donations, and will add a $35-a-month construction charge to its monthly fee to raise the remaining money. The renovations are starting with the club in the strongest financial shape in its history with 850 members, said fundraising chairman Keith Oakley. The club's monthly dues are currently about $90, compared to more than $400 at several of Raleigh's fancier country clubs. Initiation fees are $1,500 or less, compared with $20,000 or more at other clubs. Donations have been slow to come in, with just $100,000 raised so far, Oakley said. Members will name a building after someone for a $2 million donation. Having a hole on the golf course or a tennis court named in your honor will run about $5,000. "You either move forward, or you're going downhill, so you have to constantly be looking ahead at ways to improve without damaging things for the membership," Oakley said. The club isn't run by the university, but has close ties to the school. The land is leased from the state and building is leased from the N.C. State Foundation, which raises money for university programs. |
