Planning Board backs Farm Bureau move

The Wilson County Farm Bureau could have a new office location this time next year following a decision by the Wilson Planning Board Tuesday night.

The planning board approved a conditional use permit that allows the Farm Bureau to move to a location along Wooten Boulevard, at the corner of N.C. 42, and near Forest Hills Road.

The planning board decision will be reviewed for final approval by the Wilson City Council during its Sept. 18 meeting.

The new 5,000 square-foot building will be next to the Farm Bureau's district claims office in the Forest Hills Business Park, which is between a residential area and the Forest Hills Commercial Center.

Construction will include landscaping that will provide a heavy vegetative buffer alongside the Cranberry Ridge Drive neighborhood, said Janet Batten-Holland, assistant director of Wilson Planning and Development Services.

The new building will have a brick facade, which will also match the design of the Farm Bureau's district office, said Ron Sutton, with Herring-Sutton and Associates.

The new office will replace the Wilson County Farm Bureau office, at 6631 Ward Blvd., near U.S. 301, where it has been located more than 40 years. The Farm Bureau has a second Wilson office at 3542 Airport Blvd. The Farm Bureau is part of the N.C. Farm Bureau Federation, a private, nonprofit organization since 1936 that has promoted farm and rural issues through governmental relations, marketing, field representation, agricultural education, member services and other programs.

Also during the planning board meeting, Batten-Holland told the board that the proposed city ordinance for indoor and outdoor shooting ranges will go back to the City Council during its Sept. 18 meeting.

The item was last reviewed by the planning board in August.

Instead of sending it back to the planning board, the City Council asked planning staff to expand the ordinance to allow some provision for educational purposes.

The changes may allow Creekside Firearms owner James Bunn to continue teaching concealed carry handgun training on his property off Ward Boulevard.

Bunn shoots on his rear property, which is in an agricultural district and within the city's extraterritorial district.

The City Council will meet at 6 p.m. Sept. 18 in the Council Chambers on the third floor of City Hall.
