Marchers remember killed man

The family and friends of a Bailey man took to the streets Saturday in Wilson, hoping to persuade anyone with information about his death to speak to the police.

Two weeks after Donnie Morgan was murdered, dozens of people marched on East and Carolina streets Saturday. The Rev. Jerry Langley led the procession with Morgan’s brothers, Dannie and Curtis, bearing wreaths.

Men, woman and children carried signs that read, among other statements, “Donnie was a brother, uncle and friend” and “In memory of Uncle Donnie.”

As they walked, one voice rose in song, joined quickly by others.

“Victory is mine, victory is mine,

“Victory today is mine.

“I told Satan to get thee behind,

“Victory today is mine.”

The group stopped on the 900 block of Carolina Street, in front of a small neighborhood park. The brothers placed the flowers and a sign, then other loved ones laid stuffed animals at the memorial.

“We gather together not as a protest but to show our love for our deceased brother,” said Langley, pastor of Red Oak Grove Baptist Church in Stanhope.

At 4:40 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, Wilson police officers found Morgan, 52, of 3287 White Oak Lane, Bailey, inside his burgundy Chevrolet Equinox. Police have not revealed how he died, but they are investigating it as a homicide.

Police say that Morgan was seen leaving Buck’s Western Saloon on Ward Boulevard alone around 2 a.m. that night, but they are still seeking information about the events leading up to his death.

The family organized Saturday’s march to raise awareness of his death and, they hope, encourage anyone who may have seen or heard any information about the death to pass it along to Wilson police.

Donnie Morgan “never got in any trouble — we just don’t know why this would happen,” said his brother, Dannie Morgan of Bailey. “He was a person who’d help anybody.”

Porshia Morgan said, “Uncle Donnie was just a great guy, really friendly. ... We’re not sure why anyone would want to do this.”

A cousin, Betty Robinson of Virginia, said, “He was a well-liked person. He was quiet, stay to himself, but willing to help neighbors.”

After the march, family members took fliers about the crime to be posted in area businesses.

The family has offered a $1,000 reward in addition to a reward offered by Wilson Crime Stoppers.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Wilson Police Department at 399-2323 or Crime Stoppers at 243-2255. Callers need not identify themselves.
