SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Three area students have received degrees from Western Governors University.

Molly Bass of Elm City earned her Bachelor of Arts in grades K-8 interdisciplinary studies, Adam Gelo of Elm City received his Master of Business Administration and Barbara Joyner of Kenly earned her MBA in health care management.

Western Governors is a private nonprofit university offering online courses. WGU uses a competency-based education model that measures learning rather than time spent in class; students complete courses as soon as they demonstrate they have mastered the subject matter.

Designed to meet working adults’ needs, WGU was founded in 1997 following a meeting of 19 U.S. governors. The school is fully accredited and is often cited in quality rankings for distance education.
