Tigers thump KIPP in 1st conference win

In its first season as a North Carolina High School Athletic Association member, Wilson Prep took a big step toward its first conference championship Wednesday with a 9-0 boys soccer defeat of visiting KIPP Pride of Gaston.

The Tigers and Pride are the only two schools in the 1-A Tar Roanoke Conference to field boys soccer teams. Rocky Mount Prep started the season with a team but lost too many players to continue. Wilson Prep will host KIPP again Thursday, when another win for the Tigers will lock up the Tar Roanoke title.

Junior Alberto Herrera poured in four goals to lead Wilson Prep. He scored twice in the first half as the Tigers, now 4-2-2, built a 6-0 lead. Herrera also added an assist.

Devyn Bullock scored two goals and had an assist for Wilson Prep while Dashaun Williams netted a goal and an assist. Malik Bryant and Leo Giddens each had a goal while Magesty Felder, Nick Hyman and Bryant doled out two assists each.

Wilson Prep sophomore goalkeeper Cameron Bryant made five saves in recording the shutout.

The 17th consecutive win boosted the Lady Warriors to 9-0 in the league and to 18-1 overall. Hunt, described by coach Matt Lemmons as a fun group with phenomenal energy, bids for a perfect conference season at archrival Fike at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Spearing Wednesday’s victory were Bailey Kirby, Nathaly Castillo and Stella Borders with their serving. Taylor Ferrell and Madelyn Ellis led the hitting. Lemmons commended the hustle play of libero Ashton Frazier.
