The Wilson Prep varsity boys basketball team won its second consecutive game with a 74-68 victory against visiting Rocky Mount Prep on Wednesday.

The Tigers now sit three games over .500 at 6-3 behind senior Tyronne Whitaker’s 28 points, four assists and five steals effort. Nassir Blackston provided 15 points, 11 rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block. Sean Sanders had 12 points, five rebounds and three steals. Jalen Artis and Denardrick Gray also had 8 each. 

The Tigers host Southern Wake Academy on Friday night.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Lady Tigers win eighth straight

Wilson Prep’s girls basketball team survived a pour second half to win their eighth straight game over Rocky Mount Prep, 44-41, Wednesday night.

The Tigers (8-1) scored just 12 points in the second half but pulled out a win over the Jaguars (0-4). Wilson Prep got 14 points, 12 steals, eight rebounds and four assists from senior point guard Trinity Mobley. 8th grader Destiny Ainstead also poured in 23 points, grabbed five rebounds, had two steals and an block.

The Tigers will be on the road against DASH Thursday night.

SWE thumps NW Halifax 74-19

PINETOPS — SouthWest Edgecombe cruised to its fourth straight varsity girls basketball victory with a 74-19 conquest of visiting Northwest Halifax on Wednesday.

The 2-A Eastern Plains Conference Lady Cougars assumed a 25-2 lead in the first quarter and held the 1-A Tar-Roanoke Conference Lady Vikings to just four points in the first half.

Junior guard Bailey Davis led SouthWest with 23 points while sophomore Kenasja Dunn added 18 points. Sophomore point guard Jada Battle dealt 15 assists and made eight steals to go with five points while sophomore center Alonee Smallwood grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

The Lady Cougars are back in action Thursday as they visit Southeast Halifax

Tigers fall in double overtime

Wilson Prep’s boys junior varsity basketball team drops a heartbreaker, 87-84, to Rocky Mount Prep on Wednesday night.

The Tigers (7-2) held the lead at halftime, 32-28, but couldn’t maintain as the scoring increased for both teams. Sophomore Devyn Bullock was the high man with 16 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and three blocks. Sophmores Malik Bryant and James Cooper both finished with 14 points, while Jashaun Taft finished with 13 points. 

The Tigers will be on the road against DASH Thursday night.
