An Elm City man was charged Tuesday after a traffic stop led to the seizure of heroin.

Clarence Fuller Swaringen III, 61, was charged with felony possession of heroin. He was issued a $2,000 secured bond.

Wilson County deputies conducted a traffic stop Tuesday morning after spotting a car going 65 mph in a 55 mph zone. The driver of the vehicle pulled over on U.S. 301 at Elm City Road, and Swaringen was a passenger in the car.

Authorities said they requested consent to search the vehicle from the driver, who agreed.

“During the traffic investigation, the deputy noticed Mr. Swaringen attempting to hide something under the passenger side seat,” said Wanda Samuel, sheriff’s office chief of staff. “The deputy retrieved five bags of heroin labeled ‘Bad Habit’ from Clarence Swaringen.”
