Lady Bulldogs notch conference win

DUE WEST, S.C. — The Barton College women’s lacrosse team rallied to its program-record third consecutive win by a 9-8 margin against NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas rival Erskine College on Saturday.

The Lady Bulldogs, now 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference, exceeded last season’s win output and posted their first conference win decided in competition on the field. Barton picked up a league win by forfeit last season. The Lady Fleet plunged to 1-2 and 1-4, respectively.

The Lady Bulldogs trailed 8-7 when Erskine’s Raven Smith scored off an assist from Amanda Epstein with 10 minutes, 36 seconds remaining.

Barton, however, drew even at 8-8 on freshman Angelina Scarpa’s second goal of the match and seventh of the season with 6:39 remaining. Kayli Ashenfelter had the assist.

Freshman Jenna Brunclik netted the match-winner 29 seconds later. Lauren Fletcher assisted.
Brunclik paced Barton with four goals, pushing her total to a team-high 18 in just four matches. Scarpa and Ashenfelter each added two goals and an assist. Natalie Brooks contributed the other goal.

Barton freshman goalie Katherine Mattena posted 11 saves, including on all three Erskine attempts in the final 7 1/2 minutes.

The Lady Bulldogs are next in action on Monday, March 5, against Keiser University in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Lady Bulldogs top Methodist 6-3

In its women’s tennis home opener Saturday, Barton pulled out a 6-3 victory against NCAA Division III Methodist College.

Barton’s Daria Avram-Marissa Stevenson won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles before the Lady Bulldogs’ No. 2 tandem of Vanessa Sanoja-Ada Vargas notched an 8-3 victory to give them a 2-1 lead entering singles play.

Sanoja claimed a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles before Stevenson pulled out a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Methodist’s Ashton Walker, a former C.B. Aycock High standout, at No. 3 to give Barton a 4-3 lead.

Vargas, a freshman, then rallied from a 6-3 loss in her first set at No. 4 against Methodist’s Laura Brown to win the next two sets, 6-1, 6-0, for the clinching point.

Avram won at No. 1, defeating Jenna Landis 7-5, 6-4.

Barton, now 2-4, will host Francis Marion on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
