WINSTON-SALEM — Barton College launched its men’s and women’s indoor track and field seasons Sunday at the JDL January College Indoor Kickoff meet at JDL Fast Track.
Barton’s best finish in the men’s meet was senior Avery Smith’s third-place weight throw of 47 feet, 4 inches. Junior Greg Gibbs was sixth in the 800-meter dash in 2 minutes, 4.15 seconds and sophomore Deshawn Owens, a C.B. Aycock High product, took 10th in the mile run in 4:42.98.
Senior Janae Cunningham had the only top-10 finish for the Barton women, placing sixth in the weight throw (47-3.5).
Both Barton teams are back in action Friday and Saturday in the Liberty University Indoor Kick-off in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Men, women each go 0-2
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Barton men’s and women’s swimming teams each took a pair of losses in a triangular meet Saturday hosted by the University of Mary Washington.
The Bulldogs lost to the host Eagles 182-80 and to Franklin & Marshall College of Pennsylvania 181-81 while the Barton women fell 187-75 to UMW and 169-93 to FMC.
Bulldogs freshman Bartlomiej Swiderski won the men’s 100-yard freestyle in 2:12.93, the 200 backstroke in 1:56.70 and the 200 individual medley in 1:57.07.
For the Lady Bulldogs, junior Kleanza Cathers won the 200 backstroke in 2:12.93 while the 200 free relay quartet of juniors Nicola Macdonald, Alayna Moore, Kristen Price and Carrington Clack was victorious in 1:40.66.
The Barton teams will split sites with Wingate as women will swim at Wingate while the men will compete at Barton’s home pool, Harrison Family YMCA in Rocky Mount.
