Barton College won three of four NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas softball games over the weekend in South Carolina, sweeping a Saturday doubleheader at Converse and splitting Sunday’s twinbill at Limestone.
The Lady Bulldogs (13-14, 3-1 CC) launched league play Saturday with a 13-4 win in the first game and followed that with a 7-3 victory over the Valkyries (5-23, 0-4). Barton scored five runs in the fourth inning to take control of game 1. Mikayla Rose, Hannah Jones and Ashley Ferguson each drove in three runs while Jones got the victory in the pitching circle in relief.
Ferguson belted a two-run home run in Barton’s four-run sixth inning in game 2 while senior pitcher Makayla Meeks got the win.
In Sunday’s first game, Limestone scored five runs in the sixth inning on the way to an 8-3 victory that ended the Lady Bulldogs’ longest winning streak of the season at five games. Meeks took the loss in the circle while freshman catcher McCrae Knapp clubbed a solo homer.
In the Lady Bulldogs’ 9-4 win in the second game, pitcher Sierra Hearp drilled a bases-loaded double finished with four RBIs while Knapp also knocked in a pair of runs.
Jones pitched two scoreless innings to earn her first save in relief of Hearp (4-1).
Limestone exited 10-12, 3-1.
Barton will visit Francis Marion for a nonconference doubleheader Thursday.
Bulldogs get first home, league win
The first-year Barton men’s lacrosse team ended a six-game losing streak with a 13-12 win Saturday over Lees-McRae at Electrical Supply Company Field. The victory was the Bulldogs’ first ever at home as well as in Conference Carolinas play.
Sophomore midfielder Zachary Hodge knocked in a match-high five goals for the Bulldogs (2-8, 1-1 CC) while Hunter Huxoll and Bodin Nichols each scored two goals and made an assist.
Jake Copio’s unassisted goal with 13:51 left in the fourth quarter gave the Bulldogs the lead for keeps. Nichols scored on Hodge’s second assist with 6:56 to play for the goal that proved to be the difference. Lees-McRae (3-5, 0-3 CC) added a goal with 94 seconds left.
Barton will visit Chowan on Saturday.
BC win streak hits 8 games
FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. — Barton held onto first place in Conference Carolinas with a four-set victory Saturday at Emmanuel. The 25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 25-18 win was the eighth straight for the Bulldogs, who improved to 9-1 in conference matches and 14-3 overall. The Lions fell to 8-15 overall and 3-8 in league play.
Brothers Angelos and Vasilis Mandilaris led Barton with 13 and 12 kills, respectively, while junior setter Oscar Fiorentino delivered 44 assists. The Bulldogs hit .383 for the match.
Barton will host Div. I Harvard at Wilson Gym on Monday at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs, who own a one-game lead over King, will welcome North Greenville and Limestone for a pair of Conference Carolinas matches Friday and Saturday.

Barton opens outdoor season
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Freshman sprinter Danyetta Ruffin won the women’s 100- and 200-meter dashes and was part of the victorious 4x100 relay for the Lady Bulldogs at the first outdoor meet of the spring for both Barton teams Saturday.
Ruffin won the 100 in 12.66 seconds after running the prelim in 12.55. She won the 200 in 25.67. The 4x100 tandem of Ruffin, Syaani Harris, Takeitha Glaspie and Taylynn Blunt posted a time of 50.1.
Junior Micah Clemmons won the men’s hammer throw with a toss of 167 feet to lead the Bulldogs.
Both teams will compete in the Winthrop/adidas Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
