Barton routed by NGU in CC quarterfinals

TIGERVILLE, S.C. — The Barton College men’s lacrosse team saw its 2019 season end Tuesday afternoon with a 20-4 loss to North Greenville University in the quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas Tournament at Pepsi Stadium.

Barton, the No. 5 seed and qualifiers for the conference tournament in their first season as a program, finished with a 5-12 record in being outscored 38-12 over its final two games by the Crusaders  North Greenville, seeded No. 4, evened its record at 8-8 and faces undefeated top seed Limestone on Friday in the semifinals on the campus of the University of Mount Olive.

Barton trailed 2-0 after one period and 7-2 at the half, but was outscored 13-2 in the second half en route to only scoring one goal in each of the final two quarters.

The Bulldogs did rally from the early deficit, using goals from freshman Mason Chaney and sophomore Jake Copio to tie it in the second period. But NGU went on a six-goal spree to take control and outshot the Bulldogs 66-37.

Barton was outraced to ground balls by a 35-23 margin.

Chaney, Barton’s leading scorer with 49 goals, had a goal and an assist. Matt Stocks, a sophomore, stopped 15 shots. NGU’s Braeden Dixon notched the victory in goal as he was credited with 20 saves.

The first-year program does not have a senior.
