CENTRAL, S.C. — Using a mastery of doubles in both matches, Barton College tennis teams pulled off one expected outcome and engineered an upset in another during the opening round of the 2018 Conference Carolinas championships.

While the Lady Bulldogs, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, defeated Southern Wesleyan for the second time in six days with a brisk 5-0 victory, Barton’s men’s team used a sweep of doubles to catapult it to a 5-3 win over Mount Olive, the No.2 seed. The win avenged an 8-1 loss to UMO on April 3.

Thus, Barton (7-12), the No. 7 seed and defending men’s tournament champion, will face No. 3 Chowan in Saturday’s semifinal at 9 a.m. The Lady Bulldogs (14-9) face off with No. 3 seed Limestone, also at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Tightly contested doubles matches went the way for the Bulldogs in opening defense of their tournament title. At No. 1 doubles, the team of Oscar Marmestedt-Diego Agudelo defeated UMO’s Armando Ferreira-Jack Middleton in a pro-set tiebreaker, 8-7. That was followed by wins at No. 2 from Rory Gaydon-Jesus Gil, who knocked off Martin Moser-Jose Coritjos Planas 8-6. Ermanno Galimberti and Martin Eleveld completed the doubles sweep for Barton with an 8-4 win at No. 3.

The clinching points in singles came at Nos. 4 and 6 singles, where Gil beat Middleton in straight sets at No. 4. Galimberti defeated Sherzod Akramov 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 6 position.

On the women’s side, Daria Avram-Marissa Stevenson, Vanessa Sanoja-Ada Vargas amd Whitney Hamilton-Claudia Capellades all won to give Barton a 3-0 lead entering doubles. Stevenson, unbeaten in conference play, turned in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over SWU’s Jennifer Ball at No. 2 singles six days after Ball retired at Barton Tennis Complex. At No. 5, Capellades eased by SWU’s Caitlynn Nixon in a dominating 6-0, 6-0 showing.
