The Barton College women’s volleyball team ended a three-match slide with a sweep of NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas rival Chowan University on Wednesday evening in the Fike High gym.
The Lady Bulldogs, with freshman Allison Gambill and junior Kaytlin Elkins combining for 25 kills, prevailed 25-18, 25-22, 25-16 to climb to 2-3 in the conference and 5-6 overall.
Chowan departed 1-4 in the league and 3-8 against all foes.
Behind sophomore Sarah Kirk, Gambill, sophomore Anna Thompson and freshman Megan McCain, Barton jumped to a 9-3 margin in the first set. The Lady Hawks drew no closer than 12-9 and 18-15. Following a kill from Elkins, Barton was aided by seven Chowan errors to end the set.
In the second set, the Lady Bulldogs seized the lead for keeps at 9-8. However, a barrage of Barton errors enabled Chowan to draw even at 21-21 and 22-22. But the Lady Bulldogs ruled with senior Kelsey Riquelme delivering two kills and Kirk serving for an ace.
The third set featured nine ties before Barton claimed a 13-10 margin on kills from Gambill and freshman Katrina Ulbrich and an ace from Thompson. Leading 22-16, the Lady Bulldogs ended the match on a kill by Gambill and a pair of services aces from Kirk.
Gambill wound up with 13 kills and Elkins 12. Kirk notched 19 assists and McCain 16. Kirk served for five aces. Digs leaders were Baleigh Hill with 14, Gambill with 11, Elkins with 11 and Kirk with 10.
Pacing Chowan were Anixa Rosa-Martinez with 11 kills Ciara Ortega with 25 assists and Katie Houston with 14 digs.
Barton ends a nine-match homestand in the Beddingfield High gym at 7 p.m. Friday against King University.
