HIGH POINT — Barton College senior right-hander Trent Fennell has been proclaimed the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced Tuesday.

Fennell, from Dunn, claimed the distinction for the third time in his Bulldogs career for his performance in Barton’s 6-5 upset of then No. 14-ranked Belmont Abbey last weekend.

In five innings, Fennell (6-4) allowed two earned runs and struck out seven. The hard-throwing right-hander kept the Crusaders off the scoreboard until the fifth inning.

Fennell leads the conference in strikeouts (97) and strikeouts per nine innings (13.64). He is also tied for fifth with six wins.

Fennell is scheduled to make his final Barton start this weekend when No. 4-ranked Greenville (South Carolina) University visits for a three-game series this weekend that will end the Bulldogs’ season.

A doubleheader, beginning at 2:30 p.m., is scheduled in Fleming Stadium on Friday, followed by a single game at Barton’s Nixon Field at noon Saturday.

North Greenville will be attempting to clinch the Conference Carolinas regular-season champion. At 18-3, the Crusaders lead University of Mount Olive (17-4) by one game and No. 20 Belmont Abbey (16-4) by one and one-half games.
