Coming off a double-double in a victory over Elizabeth City State and a 14-point, 16-rebound performance in a loss to Francis Marion, Barton College junior center Shanika Peterkin was named the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, according to an announcement from the league office Monday.
Peterkin accounted for 19 points and 14 rebounds Saturday in a 65-54 win over Elizabeth City State in Wilson Gym, and turned in her 16-point, eight-rebound effort in the 80-68 loss to Francis Marion.
The reigning Conference Carolinas Defensive Player of the Year, Peterkin earned the league’s weekly award for the fourth time in her career.
Through four games this season, she’s averaging 14.5 points, 12.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game. Peterkin has had a double-double in each game but the season opener when she scored nine points to go with 10 rebounds.
Barton (3-1) opens conference play Saturday when the Lady Bulldogs play host to Erskine.
