The legend of Larry Russell Jr. at Barton College continues to grow as the Bulldogs senior was named the 2019 NCAA Division II Southeast Region Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Year by the USTFCCCA (United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association) for the second year in a row.
Russell, a two-time indoor All-American from Sicklerville, New Jersey, currently ranks fourth in the nation in the long jump at 25 feet. He is 20th nationally in the triple jump with a Barton-record 48-8 and 55th in the high jump at 6-7.
Russell, who repeated as Conference Carolinas Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Year, is a four-time all-region honoree and was named to the USTFCCCA All-Southeast Region Team in three events for the second straight season.
He will compete at the Div. II Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday in Pittsburg, Kansas. The long jump is scheduled for 3 p.m.
SANOJA EARNS HONOR
Lady Bulldogs senior Vanessa Sanoja was announced Wednesday as Conference Carolinas Women’s Tennis Player of the Week.
It was her first career weekly honor for the senior from Venezuela, who won at No. 3 singles and with teammate Ada Vargas at No. 2 doubles in Barton’s wins over Edinboro at home Saturday and against Shaw on Monday..
She has four wins each in singles and doubles on the season.
