BC win streak at 6 after sweep of FSU

FAYETTEVILLE — A Tuesday sweep of host Fayetteville State in a nonconference doubleheader sent the Barton softball team to its longest winning streak of the season at six games as the Lady Bulldogs posted a pair of 14-4 wins.

Barton used a nine-run fourth inning to claim the opener in five innings but needed all seven innings in the nightcap, raising its record to 13-13. The Broncos also moved to .500 at 11-11.

Junior Makayla Meeks led Barton at the plate, going 5 for 7 with four runs scored and two RBIs in the twinbill. Junior Hannah Jones knocked in six runs as part of her 4-for-6 showing while freshman Hayley Grizzle was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and five runs scored.

Jones (5-5) got the pitching win in the opening game, giving up five hits and four runs in three innings. Meeks fired a couple of shutout frames in the circle.

Teagan Crosby (2-2) went five innings to get the victory in game 2 while Ashton Pegram worked two innings, allowing no runs.

Jessica Onega extended her hitting streak to seven games.

Barton will host Conference Carolinas preseason favorite Limestone for two games Friday, starting at 2 p.m. at Jeffries Field.
