SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Barton College outscored host Converse College 18-8 over the final 5 minutes, 12 seconds of Monday’s NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas women’s basketball game to post an 82-71 victory.

Senior Kianna Wynn led the Lady Bulldogs with 29 points and 10 rebounds while freshman Akira Wiggins dropped in 15 points, the most she’s had since scoring 17 in the season opener. Wiggins was 7 of 7 from the foul line and Wynn connected on 9 of 11 as Barton made 24 of its 28 attempts for 85.7-percent accuracy.

The Lady Bulldogs, now 15-4 overall and 8-4 in league play, overcame a first quarter deficit that stretched to 11 points, with a 28-point second quarter that resulted in a 40-35 halftime lead. Barton’s margin grew to as many as 11 but the Valkyries (6-10, 1-10 CC) scrapped back to cut it a single point by the end of the third quarter. Converse took its only lead, 60-59, of the half of Abigail Lewis’ layup with 9:02 to play. But Alexa Roberson’s 3-pointer returned the advantage to the Lady Bulldogs for keeps nearly a minute later.

Roberson and senior Carmen Richardson hit big 3-pointers over the final 4:13 to help keep it a two-possession game.

Dominique Hill’s 14 points led Converse, which was just 9 of 14 from the foul line.

Barton will visit Erskine in Due West, South Carolina, on Saturday.
