New salon owner Christy Whaley is relatively new to the business, but being a stylist has always been an aspiration of hers.

“I’ve always wanted to do hair, but when I got burned out in the dental field, I wanted to be able to make my own schedule and spend more time with my kids,” said the 39-year-old Whaley. “I’ve been a stylist for about a year and a half and it is something I really enjoy.”

Prior to opening Bombshells of Wilson, Whaley worked at Jon Chelle’s Day Spa & Salon in Rocky Mount. The mother of five said being closer to home was important to her, so after about three months of planning, the salon opened in June at 2801 Ward Blvd., Suite 1D in the Shoppes at Brentwood.

“We only use Aveda, which are naturally derived products,” she said. “It is a more high-end salon and Brentwood is the right area for those types of products.”
Currently Whaley is the only stylist, but she’s looking to hire three more.

“And the upstairs portion of the building is in the works to add a massage therapist and an esthetician in the next couple of months,” she said.

Bombshells is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, but later appointments are available with advance notice. A 20 percent discount is given to first responders such as firefighters and police as well as teachers.

When not at the salon, Whaley is helping teach the next generation of stylists at Mitchell’s Academy in Wilson or spending time with her family. She said she’s proud to return to a space that her husband’s great-uncle used to operate as a camera shop.

“With Aveda, you don’t just a cut, you get a full neck massage, too,” she said. “It is just a whole different experience.”
