Bowing out of repetitive arguments

I was asked by a neighbor why I quit writing to the newspaper. He’s not the first to ask.

I thought I would tell you even though I very much doubt you will share it.

I seemed to be arguing with the same people all the time. I’m sure they felt like they won.

But I was thinking more along the lines of a scene from “Victor, Victoria.” The line from the immortal character actor Graham Stark in response to the statement from his protagonist during a debate.

“It’s a wise man who knows when to throw in the towel,” said the man.

To which Stark replies: “And it is a moron who gives advice to a horse’s ass.”

The line was written by the legend Blake Edwards, of course. But the delivery was all Stark. And brilliantly delivered.

I hope that clears up the question.
