MURFREESBORO — Barton College senior guard Michael Boykin hit six straight free throws over the final 20 seconds of Tuesday’s NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas men’s basketball game at Chowan University to help the Bulldogs hold off the Hawks 72-68.
The win was the third in a row for the Bulldogs (11-13, 9-8 CC), matching their longest winning streak of the season, and the fourth in the last five games. The Hawks tumbled to 8-14 and 5-11, respectively.
Boykin connected on 10-of-12 attempts from the foul line, part of a 19-of-23 (82.6%) showing for the Bulldogs, who also went 26 of 57 (45.6%) from the floor. Junior guard Isaiah Reddish had another big night for Barton with 32 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Jeff Gordon added 10 points for Barton, which only saw five players score.
Khalil Ridges’ 17 points paced the Hawks.
Barton never trailed and led by as many as 11 points in the first half, but the Hawks wouldn’t go away. Ridges’ 3-pointer cut the lead to a single point with 11 seconds to play but Boykin swished two free throws to push it back to three.
Boykin then fouled Isaiah Lewis on Chowan’s ensuing possession. Lewis hit the front end of the 1-and-1 but, in trying to miss the second free throw, failed to hit the rim and Barton was awarded the ball. Boykin hit two more foul shots to ice the game.
Barton goes back out on the road Saturday to visit North Greenville University in Tigerville, South Carolina.
