OXFORD, Miss. — Former Wilson American Legion Post 13 standout Spencer Brickhouse cracked a three-run home run in the fourth inning and East Carolina starting pitcher Jake Kuchmaner delivered a career-best performance to lead the 14th-ranked Pirates to a 3-2 victory Wednesday at No. 9 Mississippi.
Brickhouse’s second homer of the season staked ECU (9-5) to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning after Bryant Packard doubled and Brady Lloyd singled.
That was plenty for Kuchmaner (1-0), who retired the first 13 batters he faced before hitting Ryan Olenek with one out in the fifth. Kuchmaner, who finished with a career-high nine strikeouts, came within an out of the 11th no-hitter in Pirates history before Thomas Dillard’s single with one on ended his day.
Alec Burleson came on and gave up a two-run single before Sam Lanier finished the job.
ECU is back at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Friday for the first game of a three-game series against Marist, starting at 6:30 p.m.
