RICHMOND, Va. — Make it two matches and two victories against NCAA Division II Top 25 competition for Barton College men’s soccer coach Ian McMichael.
After opening his Bulldogs tenure with a 1-0 win over No. 23 Tusculum last season, the Bulldogs struck down another ranked foe Wednesday at City Stadium with a 2-1 victory over the University of the District of Columbia, ranked No. 16 nationally by United Soccer Coaches. Both victories over Top 25 opponents in the McMichael era have come on the road.
The result moved Barton of Conference Carolinas to 2-0 after the Bulldogs struck for a pair of goals in the first 45 minutes of play.
In the 27th minute, senior Tolly Beatson cranked a shot from 30 yards away that beat Firebirds keeper Joao Brusamolin in the right corner.
The margin doubled for Barton in the 31st, with freshman Ludovic Rocha firing a cross to sophomore Ruben Mancio at the top of the box. Mancio put away his second goal of the season to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 edge at the half.
UDC (1-1-1), members of the East Coast Conference, brought one back in the 57th with Gabriel Torres’ unassisted marker past Bulldogs keeper Francisco Noguera.
However, despite threats down the stretch, Noguera prevented the equalizer en route to five saves. Barton was outshot 13-10.
Barton kicks off Conference Carolinas play Saturday, hosting Belmont Abbey at 4 p.m.
