PEMBROKE — With just one NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas series remaining in the regular season, the Barton College baseball team took care of some unfinished nonconference business Tuesday.

Junior shortstop JoJo Allen roped a two-out double, scoring two runs in the top of the ninth inning to propel the Bulldogs to an 8-7 victory at UNC Pembroke. That squared the season series with the Braves, who thumped Barton 21-4 on a March 12 visit to Nixon Field in Wilson, and ended a five-game losing streak to the Div. II Peach Belt Conference team.

Allen’s double capped a four-run rally over the last two innings for Barton (28-18), which trailed 7-4 until Noah Almond’s two-out single scored Allen in the top of the eighth.

Junior Brandon Winstead, a Fike High product, took the mound for UNCP in the top of the ninth and was greeted with a lead-off single by Troy Maslowski, who scooted to second base on a field error by Braves left fielder Luke Jackson. With one out, a throwing error by Winstead allowed Maslowski to reach third and home safely. After Hunter Pearre was hit by a pitch, Winstead (1-6) exited in favor of Davis Hurd, who gave up the decisive double to Allen.

Barton took a 3-1 lead in the fifth on RBI singles by Marcos and Pearre and a throwing error by the Braves, who committed seven miscues.

Juan Martinez slammed a solo home run to left-center field in the sixth for Barton, his team-leading seventh.

But the Braves rallied, starting with a two-run double by former SouthWest Edgecombe High standout Jarratt Mobley in the bottom of the sixth, and took the lead with four runs in the seventh.

Freshman Brett Widerman pitched a hitless eighth to earn the win in his first career decision. Sophomore Colby Warren fired  a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save.

Shimmel earns dual honors after no-hitter

Barton junior Colby Shimmel was proclaimed pitcher of the week in both Conference Carolinas and the NCAA Div. II Southeast Region, the latter by National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Shimmel, in his first season with the Bulldogs after transferring from Hagerstown (Maryland) Community College, fired what is believed to be the only no-hitter in Barton’s Div. II era (1995-present) with a 68-pitch gem in a 2-0 win at Emmanuel College in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader in Franklin Springs, Georgia. He walked two and struck out three as he improved to 4-3 on the season.
