ELIZABETH CITY — The Barton men’s basketball team is still in search of its first 2017-18 victory after watching an 11-point lead dissipate on the road Tuesday night in an 86-82 loss at Elizabeth City State.

Barton, which dropped its third straight game to start the season, lost the lead for good after sophomore Michael Boykin was assessed a technical foul with 10:14 remaining.

Elizabeth City State of the CIAA improved to 2-1.
The Bulldogs pulled within 84-82 on the second of two Jeff Gordon free throws with seven seconds left. Boykin fouled ECSU’s Zaccheus Hobbs with four seconds to go, and Hobbs made both to cap the scoring.

Maynor had 22 points for ECSU, while Hobbs had 19 off the bench. The Bulldogs finished 31 of 69 from the field for 44.9 percent accuracy, while ECSU was 24 for 53 for 45.3 percent. Stenborg and Gordon each had 16 for Barton. Boykin had 12 on 5-for-17 shooting.

Barton carried a 38-33 lead into halftime that was cut into by a Hobbs 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The Bulldogs begin play in the Mount Olive Pickle Classic on Friday, facing Virginia Union.
