GOLDSBORO — With a final-round 299 for its low four individuals, the Barton College men’s golf team settled for a runner-up finish in The Trojan, hosted by the University of Mount Olive, at Walnut Creek Country Club on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs of head coach Ashley Leonard entered the third — and final — round a mere shot behind the University of South Carolina at Beaufort. However, USC Beaufort caded a 295 and, with an 884 total, finished five shots ahead of Barton.
Barton did defeat archrival Mount Olive for the second straight tournament. Despite Tuesday’s low round of 1-over-par 289, the Trojans could not overcome a 13-shot deficit and salvaged third place and an 892.
Individually, the Bulldogs were led by the final round by junior Justin Plane with an even-par 72 over the 7,021-yard Walnut Creek layout. Plane tied for ninth overall at 223 and claimed his fourth top-10 finish of the season.
Other Barton scores the final round were freshman Bryson Boyette with a 74, junior Scott Pechacek with a 75, senior Travis Broome with a 78 and senior Derek Hamm with an 81.
Broome owned a one-shot lead after Monday’s two rounds but wound up tied for fifth place at 220. Boyette managed a pair of 74s, but had to withdraw with an injury during his second round.
Pechacek also carded a 220 for 54 holes to earn his second top-five finish in his last three outings. At 233, Hamm claimed a share of the 29th spot in the 64-player field.
Barton’s B team also shot a final-round 299 and finished fourth in the 11-team field. Logan Zimarino keyed the B lineup with a 72, while Justin Poole shot 75, Owen Dick and Deominic O’Brien 76 each and Brandon Mumford 79.
