TIGERVILLE, S.C. — The road hasn’t been a kind place for the Barton College men’s basketball this season.

Saturday afternoon at North Greenville, unfamiliar floors and bus rides transitioned from unkind to downright cruel.

North Greenville’s Daniel Burchette laid in a pass from D.J. Brooks with four seconds remaining in overtime, overshadowing end-of-regulation heroics from Barton sophomore Jeff Gordon and sending the Bulldogs to an 86-84 loss inside Hayes Gymnasium.

Barton, which fell to 1-4 on the road this season, dropped to 9-8 overall and 5-2 within Conference Carolinas. North Greenville improved to 6-9 in all games, 2-5 within the conference. Barton, losers of two straight, remains in second place and 1 1/2 games back of first place Mount Olive.

Burchette’s game-winning layup for the Crusaders capped off a 30-point performance as he finished one rebound shy of a double-double. North Greenville, which connected on 32 of 52 shots for 61.5 percent accuracy, simply could not miss in the second half and overtime. NGU made all five of its shots in the extra period and hit 17 of 22 efforts in the second half. Barton, which carried a 30-29 lead into halftime on Gordon’s jumper, made 34 of 75 attempts for a 45.3-percent clip.

Barton trailed by as many as five points in the first half before taking its one-point lead into the half. The Bulldogs outrebounded NGU 35-31, including a 15-4 edge on the offensive glass.

The Bulldogs fell despite only committing seven turnovers, but threatened to steal a road win despite trailing by six with 22 seconds remaining. Trailing 72-66, Gordon attempted to put Barton on his back, converting a layup while being fouled by NGU’s D.J. Brooks with 13 seconds to play. Gordon completed the three-point play, and Gordon fouled NGU’s Danika Jackson with 12 seconds to go. Jackson missed the front end of a one-and-one, allowing Gordon to grab the rebound. Barton pushed the ball, leaving junior Zach Grant to take a tying 3-pointer with six seconds to go. He missed, but Gordon grabbed the rebound and retreated to the 3-point line, sinking the corner trey to force overtime at 72-72.

Gordon’s 22 points led four Barton players in double figures. Junior Bobby Stenborg had 17 and sophomore Michael Boykin had 14. Isaiah Buck-Lowman, a sophomore, chipped in 13.

Matt Moore had 18 points and Jaylon Cokley had 10 for North Greenville.

Barton remains on the road Monday night at Southern Wesleyan.
