The host Wilson Christian Academy girls soccer team returned from spring break with a 3-2 loss to St. Mary’s of Raleigh on Thursday.
The Lady Chargers were not able to overcome a pair of St. Mary’s goals in a span of five minutes midway the second half and fell to 7-3-1.
Trailing 1-0, Wilson Christian forged a 1-1 halftime tie on Kendall Harris’ goal in the 27th minute. Anna Grace Abrams had the assist.
After falling behind 3-1, the Lady Chargers struck on Lea Gossett’s unassisted goal in the 75th minute.
“They caught us out of position and took advantage with a couple of goals,” WCA head coach Don Samson said of the costly Lady Chargers defensive breakdown midway through the second half. “They did a good job in the second half of out-possessing us. They invite you to try to outrun them, and that’s not something we do well.”
St. Mary’s posted a 15-13 edge in shots and senior Wilson Christian goalkeeper Kimberly Lamm recorded eight saves.
